What is Mixing?

A 'mix' is the multi-track recording of your song. 'Mixing' is the art of making each instrumental and vocal track stand out on its own so that each can be heard clearly and in the right proportion when the song is played back on a playback device.

What is Mastering?

Mastering accomplishes several things.

1) It 'optimizes' the signal to noise ratio, and lightly compresses the signal so that you get good 'saturation' without introducing or enhancing background noise already present.

2) In multiple song projects, it 'normalizes' the average relative volumes of each song, so that the loudest part of each song competes well with the loudest part of another song, even if the two songs are a real thrash number vs. a ballad.

3) It also introduces 'digital black' (silence) between your songs, so that one song does not start immediately on the heels of the previous song. Selecting the right amount of 'black' provides enough time to 'digest' the impact of one song before proceeding to the next.

4) The mastering process also includes internal EQ adjustments.

5) You can also apply 'fading' to the beginning and end of each song, so that each song fades in and out smoothly.
